The farmer had two acres of land and purchased another two acres (land) on lease. He had borrowed Rs 4 lakh from private money lenders, the officer said.

He was, however, unable to clear the dues as the cotton crop did not yield. Prima facie, these circumstances could have forced him to take the extreme step, Durgaprasad said.
A case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered and investigations are underway, police stated.
