New Delhi: The suicide committed by 33-year-old Ram Singh, the prime accused of December 16 gang rape case of a paramedical student, has not only sent the shock waves across nation but has also brought back the memories of heinous crime on that fateful night and its aftermath.

Jagran Post takes a look at the chronology of the events since the horrific night of December 16 leading up to Ram Singh’s suicide in the case.

December 16, 2012: Ram Singh, a bus driver along with four men and a minor is on a "joy ride" on December 16 night when they cross Munirka bus stop in south Delhi where the 23-year-old paramedical student and her male friend were waiting for a bus to Dwarka.

The victims board the bus and inside, they have an altercation with the gang after they pass lewd comments at the girl. When the victims object, they are beaten up, the girl raped and later thrown out of the bus in semi-nude condition.

Just before the rape, the gang loots a carpenter after giving him a lift in the same bus.

The rape victim is admitted to the Safdarjang hospital.

December 17: The six men are so confident they will not be caught that the assailants carry on with their routine chores the next day while one bring backs the vehicle to his house.

After the rape incident, Singh takes the bus to Noida at the residence of the owner in the early hours of December 17 to avoid being caught.

But later Singh thinks nothing would happen and bring backs the vehicle back to R K Puram in south Delhi where it is detected on secret information.

December 18: The anger of the brutal gang rape of the girl spills on road. Large numbers of people gather at India Gate to demand justice for the woman, battling for life.

Delhi court sends Ram Singh to five-day police custody. Three others - Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma are arrested. Delhi High Court assures action in the case.

Health of the girl deteriorates and she undergoes second surgery.  

December 19: 
Court sends Pawan and Vinay to four-day police custody, while Mukesh is sent to judicial custody for his identification test. Both Vinay and Pawan refuse to undergo identification parade. Vinay seeks death penalty for the heinous crime.

Delhi High Court takes suo motu cognizance of the gang rape incident and decides to monitor the probe. Victim's friend records statement in court. Another accused, a juvenile, is arrested in relation to the crime.

Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital treating the victim announce she is improving but still not out of danger. Delhi brave-heart regains consciousness, tells mother she wants to live.

Transport Department cancels permit of the bus, in which the incident happened.

December 20:
The male friend of the victim identifies one of the accused as the rapist in Tihar Jail during the TIP. The juvenile is sent to the Juvenile Justice Board. Protest intensifies across the nation.

December 21: Police submit their report to Delhi High Court. Delhi HC slams city police for the report filed by it in the case.

Another accused Akshay Thakur is arrested from Aurangabad in Bihar.

As the young woman's condition worsens, hundreds, mostly women, take out a candle-light march outside 10 Janpath, the residence of Sonia Gandhi. Many women students and activists also try to enter Rashtrapati Bhavan.

December 22: SDM records victim’s statement in the hospital. Protests against the Delhi gang rape turn violent as police shut down Raisina Hill. Police use batons, water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowd. At least 70 people are injured. Some metro stations shut down.

Government sets up inquiry to suggest ways to enhance women’s safety in Delhi.

December 23:
India Gate turns into a battle zone as thousands of protesters clash with police. Clashes leave several people injured. Metro station remain shut.

Constable Subhash Chand Tomar collapses at India Gate.

The victim is on ventilator, her condition remains critical.

High Court says there will be day-to-day trial in all sexual assault cases in the capital.

Ram Singh, Pawan and Vinay refuse to undergo identification test and are sent to Tihar jail for 14-day judicial custody.

December 24: Two Delhi Police officers suspended for not stopping the bus with tinted windows in which the girl was raped. Police arrest eight people for violating section 144 imposed around India Gate. Roads again blocked as protests continue.

Main accused Ram Singh beaten by inmates inside Tihar Jail.

SDM who recorded statement of gang rape victim alleges that senior police officer interfered in the process.

Authorities promise more measures for security of women. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addresses the nation, calls for calm.

December 25:
Injured constable Subhash Tomar succumbs to injuries sustained during December 23 protests at India Gate. He is cremated with full state honours.

Mukesh, brother of Ram, sent to Tihar jail till January 6.

December 26: Victim’s condition deteriorates, is flown to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

Government asks a Delhi high court judge to probe the gang rape and police lapses and suggest ways to make the national capital safer for women.

Victim's male friend identifies Akshay Thakur as one of the persons involved in the crime.

December 27: The victim remains critical in the ICU of Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

December 28: Doctors at Mount Elizabeth say the victim's condition has worsened with signs of multiple organ failure. Tight security arrangement are made in the national capital, section 144 imposed across India Gate.

Sonia Gandhi joins Prime Minister Manmohan Singh promise quick justice.

December 29: Victim dies in the Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital due to severe brain injury. She breathed her last at 4:45 AM (2:15 AM India time).

December 30: Body of the victim is brought to India. Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi receive the body at the Delhi airport. Last rites are performed in haste.

January 01, 2013: Remains immersed into water.

January 02:  Fast track court to try sexual offence cases against women is inaugurated by Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir. Owner of the bus, Dinesh Yadav, in which paramedic was brutally raped and assaulted, detained.

January 03: Delhi Police file 1000-page chargesheet in a Delhi court against the five men, slapping murder, rape, kidnapping, dacoity, destruction of evidence and other charges.

January 05:  All the five accused are brought under suicide watch.

February 02: Five accused are charged with 13 offences including murder.

February 28: Juvenile Justice Board frames rape, murder charges against minor accused.

March 11: Main accused Ram Singh commits suicide in his cell in Jail No 3 at around 5 am.
