New Delhi: The Delhi government is mulling to provide night shelters to the homeless outside the national capital territory. The government will utilise the area around Delhi-Haryana border to construct temporary night shelters.
It has approached Urban Development Ministry to grant land to construct these temporary shelters for the homeless.
There are almost 65 permanent and 150 non-permanent night shelters for the down and outs in Delhi. The government has given blankets and mattresses to the poor. Apart from this, facilities of drinking water, sanitation, medical van etc have been given for their comfort.
According to the sources, there are around one lakh homeless people in the national capital. And there is an increase in the number every year. Hence the government is planning to utilise the border area for the construction of night shelters to accommodate maximum number of people.
However, if night shelters are constructed on Delhi-Haryana border, the people who will be accommodated would face employment problems. They will have to commute daily to earn their livelihood.
