On the directions of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, a high-power committee chaired by DTC chairperson was recently constituted to workout the possibility of new BRT corridors which do not cause traffic mess like the existing BRT Corridor (Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand) did.
"The committee has recommended five new BRT corridors - Karawal Nagar to Mori Gate, Gazipur to National Stadium, Badarpur to IGI Airport, Dilshad Garden to Tikri Border and Bhopura Border to Janakpuri District Centre.
"We have sent a proposal in this regard to L-G to get his go-ahead for choosing one of them for its construction in the first phase," said a senior Delhi government official. The official said that these five BRT corridors have been proposed on roads that have sufficient land to construct such a stretch without touching existing roads so that new structures don't create problems for motorists.

The BRT, which was implemented in 2008 from Amdedkar Nagar to Lajpat Nagar, has been embroiled in controversies since its inception due to regular traffic mess. "After getting L-G's approval, we will soon start works on the construction of one of the five proposed BRT corridors in first phase. In second phase, we will work on the remaining four proposed corridors," he added.

On Saturday, Jung handed over the operation and maintenance of BRT corridor (Ambedkar Nagar to Delhi Gate - 14.5 km) to the the Public Works Department (PWD), and Intelligent Signalling System to Delhi Traffic Police. The previous agency DIMTS, which was looking after the works related to BRT Corridor since the inception of this stretch, has been removed by the government.
