New Delhi: On the lines of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Board (DERC), the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has prepared grounds for privatisation of some of its plants and units. After privatising the water distribution plant in Malaviya Nagar and Vasant Vihar and two other water treatment plants the board has decided to hand over the management of three more water recycling plants to private companies.

The Board has begun its search for private companies in this regard.

The board has decided to hand over the management of recycling units of Haiderpur, Wazirabad and Bhagirathi water treatment plants to private companies. About 16 mgd water from the Haiderpur plant, 11 mgd water from the Wazirabad plant and 10 mgd water from the Bhagirathi plant is being supplied to Delhi at present.

According to sources, the private companies will be given a five year contract for managing the plants involving an investment of Rs 38 crores.

Recently, the management of the Bhagirathi water treatment plant was handed over to a renowned private company secretly and workers deployed here were transferred to other departments. Reacting on the board’s decision labour unions held protests and announced a strike to be observed on February 28.
