Experts believe that it is the rising number of vehicles on the roads in Delhi that has made the national capital most polluted one.

The Delhi government has now decided to rein in number of private vehicles running on the roads. Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Friday said that the government has several options through which it can keep a check on the growing number of private vehicles in the national capital.

Talking to reporters, Jung said that the government is mulling to allow private vehicles to run on particular day as per their numbers. For example, if a person’s vehicle number ends with 1,3,5,7 or 9, then he/she can only take out their vehicles on the days allotted by the government. Similarly another days will be allotted for vehicles whose number ends with 2,4,6 or 8.

Jung said that in the coming days, the idea will be implemented only after discussion with the officials.  It is reported that the total number of vehicles in the capital has risen to 75 lakhs. Out of these, maximum numbers of vehicles are registered as private ones.

A senior officer suggested that first of all it should be implemented on government officials. As per the new norms, all the government officials except some top babus will use public transport to reach offices on a particular week day.
