The protesters marched to 10, Janpath - Gandhi's residence here - from Jantar Mantar after a demonstration there and sat holding candles and shouting slogans against the government and demanding immediate action in the rape case.
Around 7:30 PM, police tried to clear the place by detaining some of them, but others managed to free themselves and get away from a bus for those detained.
They continued to sit in front of the residence but an hour later, three women were allowed to go inside 10, Janpath to meet senior Congress leader Motilal Vohra. The women who went inside were Santosh Koli, Vandana Singh and Sarita Singh.
Vohra asked the women about their motive to visit Gandhi's residence, to which they said they wanted to know what steps the government had taken to speed up 80,000 pending rape cases.
The Congress leader said that there is a shortage of judges and that also five fast-track courts have been formed to deal with the rape cases.
The protesters demanded that the rapists of the 23-year-old girl be immediately hanged claiming that their guilt has been proved already.
"Why is the government taking a long time?" asked one of the protesters.
One carried a poster which read, "Either you take a quick action or there will be a violent reaction." Several groups also held candle light vigil at the India Gate here to express solidarity with the victim.
