New Delhi: The ‘Go for Gold’ torch to spread the spirit of sportsmanship reached the capital on Sunday. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had waved off the historic lamp from Jammu on March 1. The torch passing through Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Haryana reached Delhi amid much fanfare.

The arrival of the lamp received a warm welcome at Nehru Stadium and a race was also organized on the occasion. Apart from the participation of former athlete Milkha Singh, shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, boxers Anil Kumar, Manoj Kumar also welcomed the torch. Swimmer Khajan Singh, hockey player Zafar Iqbal; parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor, Shahnawaz Hussain and Naveen Jindal were also present at the event.

Go for Gold organizer Monnet Group vice president Sandeep Jajodia told the reporters, “The main motive of this race and the initiative of taking the torch in different parts of the country is to connect the youth to the Olympics Games and enlighten them about the games.”

12 athletes will take the torch to 50 towns and cities in different parts of the country covering a distance of about 6,000 kilometres to reach Kanyakumari in the end of May.
