Deoband (UP): Darul Uloom's vice chancellor Maulana Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi's fate- whether he will remain VC or not- will be decided by a three-member sub committee of clerics.

However, the Majlis-e-Shura, a governing council of Darul Uloom, appointed Mufti Abul Qasim Naomani Benarasi as "acting" VC with powers and he would take over the position fully if Vastanvi is removed in the future.

According to a spokesman of Darul Uloom, "The three-member subcommittee will comprise Mufti Ismail (from Maharashtra), Mufti Manzoor Ahmed (Kanpur) and Maulana Ibrahim Malik (Tamil Nadu)."

"While no timeframe has been fixed for the subcommittee to submit its report, it has been asked to complete the task as early as possible," he said.

Vastanvi has courted controversy since he became vice chancellor for reportedly speaking in favour of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s rule and his development policy, saying it was time to move on from the 2002 communal violence.

A senior member of the teaching faculty said the shura took a wise decision. "The decision will silence both pro- and anti-Vastanvi camps."

"Vastanvi will be a rubber stamp VC. He is still there but powerless and Mufti Benarasi will have the actual power," he said, adding that the move was a positive step to bring normalcy to the seminary.
