Ranchi: In a startling revelation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday divulged that 2,086 acres of land and over 30,000 housing units of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) were under illegal possession in Jharkhand. Surprisingly, the list of encroachers includes the Deputy Chief Minister, several ministers and many top level officials.

This was revealed by the CBI in the list submitted to the Jharkhand High Court on Monday. The HC bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Tatia and Justice P P Bhatt was hearing a PIL on illegal encroachments in the properties and residential quarters of the PSUs on Monday.

The bench was shocked to see the names of Deputy CM Hemant Soren, leader of Opposition Rajendra Singh, MP Chandra Prakash Choudhary, MLA Dadai Dubey, former Union Minister Rita Verma, IAS Manish Ranjan and IPS Manoj Kaushik in the list submitted by the probe agency.

Rapping the Centre on the issue, the Court ruled that CCL, BCCL, BSL and HEC are Central government undertakings and yet the management boards are reluctant to remove the encroachments.

The bench also lashed out at the state government saying thousands of people have become homeless during the anti-encroachment drive carried out by the government as the latter is giving legal benefits to only a handful of people.

They also directed the CBI to publish the names of encroachers in the local dailies within 10 days. The list should also be sent to the Union Coal Ministry, Heavy Industries Ministry and Steel Ministry, directed the court. The bench also directed all the PSUs to submit the progress report by July 12.
