New Delhi: The Director General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI) has imposed a service tax of Rs 5 crore on Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Yogpeeth, alleging that it was actually running a club under the garb of a trust. The DGCEI has also issued show-cause notices to Ramdev’s trust in this regard.

Central Excise Commissioner VK Saxena had in April this year sent a notice to Ramdev’s trust seeking its reply on the matter. But Ramdev’s trust failed to reply, after which the department issued a notice confirming chargsheet against his trust.

The DGCEI Director General is closely monitoring the functioning of Baba Ramdev’s trusts. Sources said that a team of DGCEI has expedited its probe into the use of scents by Patanjali Yogpeeth.
