Dhanbad: In a shocking exposure, the Jharkhand police on Friday busted a mafia operating coal mining under a crowded colony here.

Acting on a tip off, Dhanbad SP Ravikant Dhan along with his team on Friday raided a coal mine expanded over 10 kms under the crowded Tetuliya colony with its entrance and exit gates constructed in the colony as well as in the jungle nearby.

“In the initial inquiry, the names of two people Laltu and Rahul yadav who were carrying the illegal mining here have come into light. While we are on a lookout for them, we have arrested 50 migrant labourers engaged in the illegal activity,” said Dhan.

Thousands tonnes of coal and three trucks have been seized from the site.

“It is believed that the mafia was operating for a long time. Deals of thousands tonne of coal were being carried out on a daily basis.” said Dhan.

Ramanuj Verma, O.P under Sonardih police station has been suspended for negligence.

“Every arrangement in the mines was well organized similar to the legal mining sites,” said SP Dhan indicating link between local police and mafia in the entire operation.

Meanwhile, search operations in the houses of the locality were conducted in a bid to find the links of mafia.

The local people are in extreme shock after discovering that the coal mafia was operating right under the nose of the authorities and the populace here.

The illegal coal mining in a well crowded locality on such a large scale clearly indicates a close nexus between local administration and the coal mafia.
