Rohtak: Dharampal, who is presently lodged in Rohtak Jail, wept bitterly after rejection of his mercy plea by President Pranab Mukherjee on April 3, 2013.

As soon as he came to know that the President turned down his mercy plea, Dharampal expressed his wish to meet his family members. During the conversation with family members, he got emotional.

Dharampal’s father Chander Singh and younger brother Prem Singh arrived at jail to meet Dharampal. The family members didn’t show willingness to file appeal after rejection of Dharampal’s mercy plea.

Sources said that Dharampal ate nothing since Thursday morning.  Rohtak Jail Superintendent Shishpal Sangwan said that the prison has no arrangement for execution. Thereby, the jail administration is soon going to shift Dharampal either to Hisar or Ambala Central Jail.

Dharampal was charged with raping a girl in Sonepat in 1991 and was given a 10-year imprisonment in 1993 by a local court. Shortly after being granted parole in 1993, he killed girl's parents, her sister and two brothers while they were sleeping in their house.

Dharampal and his brother Nirmal were awarded death penalty for the murders in 1997. The sentence was upheld by the High Court a year later. However, in 1999, the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence of Nirmal to life imprisonment.
