Maintaining his reputation of being a contentious and divisive politician, Shah while campaigning  for BJP's Azamgarh candidate Ramakant Yadav, who is taking on Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, had said the number of terrorists from Azamgarh were more as the state government was advocating their release in many cases.

Digvijay accused the BJP, Modi and Shah of shunning the development plank and stooping to their communal propaganda. He also accused the Sangh activists for their involvement in the Modasa bomb blasts.

The Congress leader also termed Azamgarh as symbol of Hindu Muslim amity.

“Modi/Amit Shah have come back to Communal Campaign from Development. They have forgotten involvement of Sanghi activists in Modasa Bomb Blast,” Digvijay tweeted on Monday morning.

“Modasa is in Gujarat. Azamgarh has been a symbol of Hindu Muslim Amity. It didn't have any riots in 47 and 92 post Babri Masjid demolition,” he added.

“I strongly condemn Amit Shah's statement about Azamgarh. Election Commission must take action,” he further tweeted.

Digvijay also questioned Modi for the grants given by the Gujarat government to Shabri Ashram of former RSS activist Swami Aseemanand and to another saffron leader Pragya Singh's NGOs.

“Would Modi tell us grants Gujarat Govt and he has given to Shabri Ashram of Aseemanand and to Pragya Singh's NGOs both accused in Bomb Blast,” Digvijay tweeted.

Shah, who is the BJP’s in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, had said, “Azamgarh is the base of terrorists as there is no fear of the government, which is advocating their release.”

Shah's remark also drew sharp criticism from the ruling Samajwadi Party, which demanded the Election Commission to take immediate cognizance of it.

"Such a remark is an insult to Azamgarh. BJP wants to win the elections by communalizing the atmosphere. The Election Commission should immediately take cognizance of Shah's remark and take action against him. Though Election Commission had once taken action against him, he has not mended his ways," senior Samajwadi Party leader CP Rai alleged.
