New Delhi: In what is seen as a politically motivated decision, with an eye on the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi, the Sheila Dikshit government is seriously considering the authorization of 895 unauthorized colonies in the city.

The Dikshit government had played the same political gimmick before the 2008 assembly elections too, then providing 1200 unauthorized colonies with a provisional authorization certificate. It is believed that the political winds then were blowing against the Congress government. But, this masterstroke of the Sheila government where she roped in Sonia Gandhi to distribute the certificates, catapulted her government to a win.

The colonies have been authorized after the nod given by the Lieutenant Governor. The government has also duly issued a notice in this regard. Following this, the residents’ welfare associations that were previously issued provisional certificates may be provided with permanent certificates.

According to those associated with this project, this one move could take the wind out of the sails of the opposition, who were intent on making this issue a major election plank, apart from the usual issues such as water, electricity, poor housing etc. It must be noted that more than fifty percent of the over one crore of the city’s voters hail from these unauthorized colonies.

The Delhi government had issued a notice to authorize the 895 colonies in September 2012. The government has shelled out over a billion rupees for the development of these colonies. Urban Development Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely, has asserted that the remaining unauthorized colonies too shall be authorized soon.
