Uttarkashi: Strategically important Gangotri National Highway has turned into a major challenge for the Indian Army personnel deployed in the higher reaches along the Indo-China border, as the dilapidated condition of the highway coupled with frequent obstructions due to landslides disrupts food and other supplies to them.

Frequent landslides during monsoon force the highway to remain closed for days, thus multiplying the woes of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel and other battalions of Army, apart from causing trouble to pilgrims.

This year, landslide at Nalapani forced the National Highway to remain closed for 21 days.

In 2010, the Gangotri highway remained closed for 23 days after a stretch of hundred metre on the route caved in.

The Army had to construct an iron bridge to resume traffic on the stretch which had caved in.
