New Delhi: Striking a huge blow to the black marketers of kerosene, the government scheme to provide direct subsidy benefit to kerosene customers may soon yield results.

According to the plan, bank accounts for all customers buying kerosene through Public Distribution System (PDS) plan will be opened. The total price of kerosene will be delegated in their account.

The Centre will fund the state governments which in turn transfer the amount to the customers’ account to provide them direct subsidies.

In a meeting between Nandan Nilekani Committee and Petroleum Ministry, it was decided that among LPG, fertilizer and kerosene, direct subsidy of the last resource can be easily given. After finalizing this, the Ministry prepared a proposal in this regard.

The proposal was sent to Planning Commission, Food and Public Distribution Department and Finance Ministry for consideration.

During the budget session, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had announced the implementation of this plan by the end of this financial year.

According to sources, the Petroleum Ministry wants to adopt a simple process in this regard. This is the reason it has been decided to provide kerosene to the customers via their respective state governments.
