Chennai: The opposition party in Tamil Nadu DMK on Saturday contributed a sum of Rs 50 lakh towards relief measures in the Thane cyclone-hit areas of Cuddalore, Villupuram and Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring Puduchery.

Party chief M Karunanidhi distributed sums of Rs 20 lakh and Rs 10 lakh each to DMK functionaries from Cuddalore, Villupuram and Tiruvarur districts, respectively.

A DMK statement said that he gave away Rs 10 lakh for Puduchery also as his party's contribution, on behalf of the DMK Trust.

The statement said that he had pledged Rs 50 lakh after touring the affected districts early this week.

Cyclone Thane had wreaked havoc in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry ten days back.
