The DMRC has tied up with the Tunnel Training Academy, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, where DMRC engineers will be sent to improvise their internal expertise in underground tunnelling engineering.

According to the sources, the first batch of ten engineers will be sent to the academy for training next month.

The trainees will reportedly be exposed to working TBM (tunnel boring machines) models and the use of cutting tools such as disk cutter and cutting knives, which are used to cut through soil and rocks encountered by the TBMs during underground tunnelling operations.

Established in December 2011, the Tunnel Training Academy in Kuala Lumpur creates a simulated underground environment and has trained 508 engineers so far.

Officials said the DMRC is also planning to set up its own such tunnel training academy in Delhi.
