New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is going to reserve two compartments for women in each eight-coach Metro train. DMRC is likely to introduce this on Women’s day on March 8th.

After the Delhi gang-rape incident, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has suggested the DMRC officials to reserve two compartments in eight-coach metro trains so that women could travel safely.

“We have received a letter on January 21st from the chief minister’s office seeking to introduce two women’s bogies in the eight-coach metro trains as it is not feasible to provide the same in four or six coach metro trains” Sharat Sharma, Director (operations), DMRC, said.

A top Delhi Metro official said that the DMRC has started conducting surveys in the busy route of Jahangirpuri- Gurgaon and Noida-Dwarka.

A study has also been conducted to ascertain the number of women commuters on these routes, Sharma added.

“After analysing the rush of women commuters, we may introduce two women’s compartments in eight-coach trains,” informed the DMRC Director.

For the first time, DMRC had introduced the eight coach trains on Jahangirpuri-Huda city center line in November 2012. Only one compartment is reserved for women in this train too.
