“A Muslim, who does not vote for SP and talks against it, is not a Muslim. His DNA test should be conducted. See whether he is from RSS,” he said while addressing an election rally in support of SP candidate Bhalchandra Yadav at Khalilabad.

Congress leader Naveen Jindal called Azmi's remarks an insult to democracy.

“Mr Abu Azmi's remarks on Muslim's not voting for SP are worth condemnation and are an insult to democracy,” he wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

NCP leader Nawab Malik also lashed out at Azmi for his remarks.

“Abu Azmi is not a spiritual leader. He has no right to tell Muslims as to whom they should vote,” Malik posted on twitter.

Azmi had faced a lot of flak a few weeks ago when he was quoted as saying that rape victims should be punished. He later denied making such comments.
