Fatehgarh Sahib: The callousness by a gynecologist claimed the life of a newly born baby in Civil Hospital here on Sunday. The incident happened when the doctor gave direction of delivery to the hospital nurses on telephone and did not attended the patients even after getting the information related to the  delivery.

As per the information provided by the sources in hospital, the health condition of the baby deteriorated soon after the birth. Nurses asked the kin to take the baby and the mother to a private hospital, where the baby was declared dead.

Charan Singh, resident of Bhamrasi Buland village admitted her pregnant daughter Gurdeep Kaur on Saturday night after she complained of contractions. Gurdeep’s husband, Jasbeer Singh of Bahram village alleged that her wife suffered from intense labour pain throughout the night but the doctor did not came to examine her and gave direction to the nurses over telephone.

On Sunday afternoon when Gurdeep delivered a baby boy, the nurses asked family members to shift the baby in a private hospital. The infant was declared dead soon after he was taken to the hospital. Gurdeep’s family protested against the doctor and hospital authorities and demanded justice.

Dr Kuldeep Singh said that the delivery was normal but the umbilical cord was tied around the baby which made the entire process risky. “The baby was in a serious condition when he was born. Therefore, he was referred to private hospital,” said Singh.

Speaking on the incidence, civil surgeon Dr Gurmail Singh said Dr Sunil Juneja has been asked to submit the report. He confirmed that the hospital authority have earlier received complaint against gynecologist. “Stern action will be taken against the accused doctor,” he said.
