Earlier last month, Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung gave the transport department his approval to amend the Delhi Motor Vehicle Act, which exempts women from wearing helmets.

Following the Lieutenant Governor’s approval, Delhi's transport department had sought permission from Election Commission for issuing a gazette notification for the same.

The transport department will now issue a notification inviting suggestions and objections from general public against its proposal to amend Rule 115 (2) of the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules, which made helmets optional for women. The final notification will be issued after a month.
