New Delhi: Citing uncertainty about the dates of the festival of ‘Barawafat’, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad, the Election Commission on Sunday announced to reschedule the first phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly election which was earlier slated for February 4. The fresh date will be announced soon.

The EC on Sunday said, during our two-day meeting in Lucknow on Friday and Saturday, the law and order agencies and districts election officers had referred to the possibility of the ‘Barawafat’ festival coinciding with the first phase date.

The Commission also said that notification for 60 constituencies going to polls on February 4, which falls in western UP, won’t be issued on Tuesday as scheduled.

The majority of population in Najibabad, Bijnor, Moradabad, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur, Shahjahanpur, Amroha and Rampur are Muslims.
