New Delhi: The incidents of fire in the Income Tax department, which is handling the 2G spectrum case, has forced the Enforcement department (ED) to be on alert to control any such accident happening in its department’s offices.

The department is of the view that as a part of conspiracy, the files related to the high profile people involved in the case can be destroyed in the guise of fire.

Though the department has kept the important files in fire proof shelves, the overall security scenario in its Delhi branch is still a concern for the department.

On April 21, fire broke at the Jhandewalan Extension office of the I-T department. However, refuting all speculations of the fire being a deliberate ploy, the department said the fire was due to the short circuit in the office and confirmed that no files related to the 2G scam has been damaged. But sources say that few files have been damaged.

“The security system of the Delhi branch which is handling cases like 2G spectrum, Commonwealth Games, Koda scam, MCI, AICTE is in a very bad shape. And in such circumstances, the high-profile people related to such incidents may try to destroy the evidences,” said a senior official of the ED department.

Speaking on enhancing the security system, the official said: “The department has demanded fire- proof cupboards to store important files. The concerned authorities have already been told about the necessity of the security system, but nothing much has been done on that front.”
