New Delhi: Six prominent sports personalities from Haryana Olympic Association have appealed to the voters to elect capable individuals with clean image as office bearers of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the polls of which is scheduled to be held on November 25.

In a signed statement issued here today, six sportspersons, three of whom are Members of the Legislative Assembly, said: "We sports lovers today fervently appeal at this historic moment to the electorate to exercise their franchise with a sense of responsibility so that sports and youth affairs are handled by able and conscientious persons who can give a sense of direction and motivate the youth of this country."

The six sportsperson include Anand Singh Dangi, MLA and president of Haryana Athletics Association; Ch Dharam Bir Singh, MLA and president of Haryana Swimming Association; Rao Dan Singh, MLA and working president of Haryana Football Association; Ravinder Singh, president of Haryana Basketball Association; Ashok Mehta, president of Haryana Kabaddi (Circle) Association and Sandeep Singh, president of Haryana Kabaddi (NS) Association.

They also drew attention of common man towards corruption prevalent in sports administration.

"The Commonwealth Games (CWG) held in the recent past in India created a furore with its related alleged scams tumbling out days thereafter. In the backdrop of this depressing scenario the forthcoming elections of the office bearers of the IOA give us an opportunity to think, act and cleanse the system by electing people who are men of proven integrity, vision and dedication," the joint statement said.

"We sports lovers in particular are keenly watching and fervently hoping that the electorate will act responsibly when casting their votes and will hopefully rise above petty quid pro quos and put a team at the helm of affairs of this premier sports organisation of the country who are of impeccable repute.

"Suresh Kalmadi has thankfully been prohibited from contesting these elections. However, as expected, his stooges of the likes of Lalit Bhanot and Abhay Chautala etc are contesting the elections. Bhanot was one of the main accused in the CWG scam and also remained behind the bars, so it would be sad indeed if they once again manage to win the elections," it added.
