New Delhi: Directing its officials to remain on alert against anti-social elements in the five poll-bound states, the Election Commission on Monday stressed on conducting free and fair elections.

In a meeting of the Commission held on Monday to discuss the law and order situation in five poll-bound states, the EC reviewed the law and order situation of Manipur and Goa.

The EC also asked the officials posted in Manipur to keep a tab on the movements of militants in the state. Over 290 candidates are in the fray for the Manipur Assembly elections scheduled on January 28.
   
Further, the EC asked the concerned officials to initiate steps to ensure free and fair elections in the forthcoming Assembly polls in five states.

The Election Commission has announced seven-phased polls in Uttar Pradesh between February 8 and 28, while Assembly elections in Punjab, Uttarakhand will be held in a single phase on January 30.

Assembly elections in Manipur and Goa will be held on January 28 and March 3 respectively.

Counting of votes in all the states will be held on March 4.
