New Delhi: Preparations have been intensified for assembly elections across five states next year. If the equation fits in, the Election Commission (EC) is considering to hold elections in Uttar Pradesh during the same time as in Uttarakhand and Punjab.
However, the entire strategy will be given a final shape in November.

The tenure of Assemblies in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Manipur will expire in February next year. In this backdrop, the EC is mulling to hold Uttar Pradesh Assembly election during the same time period.

The month of February is considered befitting for holding elections whereas March and April are not favourable due to final exams in schools.

The EC also argues that holding elections of different states together has minimum possibility of any rigging or any untoward activity. .

The Union Ministry for Home Affairs has also assured to provide 700-800 companies of CRPF to the EC for the assembly elections.

According to sources, the EC is all set to announce February for UP elections but it is in doubt due to political reasons.

The EC is concerned that people should not have the misperception that the BSP is conducting polls prior to the slated time.

Sources further said that if the ruling party BSP and Union government agree for early elections, the EC will conduct polls in Uttarakhand, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh together.

Some EC officials are in favour of holding first round of polling in UP by January end as it is a large state. However, at the same time polling in January end is likely to pose few problems for the EC.
