Thousands of children have been dying every year due to encephalitis that causes acute inflammation of the brain and leads to fever, headache, confusion, and sometimes seizures. Despite, no party or candidate is ready to raise the burning issue and take a step towards tackling it.

Going by the government figures, more than 8000 cases of encephalitis have been reported in UP and Bihar in the past two years and over 1600 children have lost their lives. Sources say that only half of the deaths are registered in the government records.

Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur and Champaran, Gopalganj and Vaishali of Bihar are badly affected by the menace. Encephalitis is common in these areas, thanks to lack of pure drinking water and proper nutrition.

BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur does not have enough beds and medical facilities to treat the large number of kids suffering from encephalitis. There is an urgent need to start a proper programme that provides medical facilities for the kids who get handicapped due to the disease.

For the past many years, Dainik Jagran has been working towards tackling this deadly disease that starts right after the monsoon season. The Centre had approved Rs 4000 crore special scheme for fighting encephalitis in UP and Bihar by constituting a Group of Ministers (GoM). However, no step has been taken by the government yet.
