Jammu: Cases of illegal possession of Waqf Board land in Jammu and Kashmir have been on the rise with the establishment of shops, schools and hospitals on more than a dozen graveyards.

In Jammu alone, around 8,000 canal of land is illegally occupied. Not only land mafias, even the government departments are engaged in illegal possession of land.
Minister of State for Haj and Waqf, Aijaz Ahmad Khan, in Assembly said that cases of illegal possession of land and graveyards are on a rise.

In Jammu, out of 35,497 canal land at least 27,290 is lying wasted.  People have illegally constructed houses and shops in mosques and graveyards.

Waqf Board’s land in districts likes Akhnoor, Kathua etc have also been occupied. The illegal possession of land is done mostly by the education department.

Khan said that in Chandnagar of Jammu, a land of Pir Baba Subhan Ali Shah is illegally occupied by the Sikh community and they have established Nishan Sahib. The case is still pending in the court.

While responding to the opposition members, Khan informed that the Custodian department, created to look after the immovable properties of people who fled to Pakistan, has also illegally acquired Waqf Board’s land.
