Cuddalore (TN): The engine of a passenger train derailed at Tirupapuliyur station in the district, but none of the 261 people on board were injured, a railway official said.

The Mayiladuthurai-Villupuram train was arriving at a slow speed at the station at about 2000 hrs on Friday night when the front two wheels of the engine fell loose, assistant station master V Balakrishnan said, adding the gap between the rail line joints was suspected to be the reason for it.

Balakrishnan said passengers were transported to their onward destinations by buses.

The derailment resulted in a three hour delay of other trains on the route. Repair work was carried out and through traffic resumed from midnight last night, he said.
