However, these employers would have to make payments electronically through Internet banking from January onwards.

"The Central Provident Fund Commissioner has allowed employees who remit contribution less than Rs 1 lakh in a particular month to make such payments through bank drafts or banker's cheques or cheques upto December, 2015.

"Thereafter it shall be mandatory from January 1, 2016 for all employers to make payments electronically through internet banking," said an Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) order issued today.

The Labour Ministry had made it mandatory to pay statutory contributions electronically through Internet banking on May 5 this year.

Earlier in June, the EPFO had allowed small firms to make payments through bank drafts or banker's cheques till September this year. EPFO gave this breather considering the fact that many of the participating employers having smaller workforce might not readily have Internet banking facility.

These small employers also had an option to make payment through Internet banking during the interim period till September this year.

EPFO has over 6 crore subscribers and manages a corpus of Rs 6.5 lakh crore.
