UP to set up Lion Safari in Etawah

Lucknow: Adhering to the long cherished desire of his father and Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav is trying to put his best to launch a lion safari park in his hometown Etawah.

The lucrative project which was kick-started during the last tenure of the Samajwadi Party rule and was put on hold by the Mayawati government.

After completing the survey, the Forest Department has prepared the final proposal of the plan which now will be forwarded to the Union Forest and Environment Ministry. After receiving instructions from the Chief Minister, the forest department swung into action.

Nearly 150 hectares of land in Fisher Forest on Etwah- Gwalior highway has been selected as the site for the lion safari. It is to be noted that about 1,100 hectares of land area here was reserved for forests since the British rule.

During the last tenure of the SP government, the forest department had prepared a proposal to make a lion safari on 150 hectares of the land which was limited to 50 hectares after an amendment.

The Central Zoo Development Authority (CZDA) and the Supreme Court have already given their go-ahead to the proposal.

Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) JS Asthana said, “While giving an approval for the project, the CJDA had asked to set up a breeding center for lions and made it clear that only the cubs born of the lions and brought to the center must be released in the safari.”

However, the permission for the transfer of land marked in the fisher forest for the purpose is yet to be received as the Forest and Environment Ministry had raised some objections to the proposal for the project in year 2006.
