Paris: The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain are calling on Yemenis to quickly agree to a cease-fire and reconciliation after President Ali Abdullah Saleh left the country for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.

The European heads of state and government issued a rare joint statement saying they are ready to support efforts by the Yemeni people to choose their leader democratically.

A statement issued by President Nicolas Sarkozy's office on Tuesday said that the leaders support a proposal by the Gulf Cooperation Council as a basis for national dialogue and unity in Yemen.

The Elysee Palace said that in other signatories were German Chancellor Angela Merkel,Prime Ministers Silvio Berlusconi of Italy, David Cameron of Britain and Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain.
