Bangalore (Agencies): Former Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, MP Prakash passed away on Wednesday. He was 71 and is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.

An esteemed leader known for his simplicity and integrity, Prakash was also a theatre fan. He had directed and acted in Kannada plays.

He was the Dy CM in the Congress-Janata Dal-Secular coalition in 2006-07. Prakash was elected to the assembly four times from Bellary district, from where he hailed.

The last rituals will be performed on Thursday at Hadagali, his home town in Bellary.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa condoled Prakash's death.

Schools and colleges in Bellary district will remain shut on Thursday as a token of respect towards Prakash.
