Jammu: In the wake of examination scandal Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed on Friday resigned from the council of ministers.

According to the sources in the party, Peerzada has tendered his resignation to UPA President Sonia Gandhi directly instead of J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. However, the party high command has not yet announced its decision in this regard.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Peerzada released a statement confirming his resignation and claimed that he has been deliberately mired in a controversy.

It needs to be mentioned that Jammu and Kashmir Police's Crime Branch has found alleged irregularities in the answer sheets of his foster-son Imam Sauban's class 10th examination which he had passed. The crime branch submitted its report to the government on February 7 in this regard.  Thereafter, pressure was mounted on the education minister to tender his resignation.

The issue was raised by Omar Abdullah in the meeting of Congress high command and assured that action will be taken at the earliest.

The Crime Branch in its report submitted to the government also identified three officials involved in this.

The report said there were two hand writings on three answer sheets of the Class 10 exam taken by the student,

The sources said the three identified officials belonged to the examination division of the J & K Board of Secondary Education.

Sauban had passed his Class 10 exam in 2009 allegedly with the help of officials of the J&K Board of School Education.

Astonishingly, it was for the second time in the last five years Peerzada had to tender resignation for being embroiled in graft cases. In 2008, Peerzada was accused of taking Rs 40,000 bribe and was forced to resign from the State Council.
