Beijing, Jan 19 (Agencies): An explosion at an oil refinery in China sparked off a major fire, which was brought down subsequently, officials said on Wednesday.

Fire at the oil refinery in China's northeast Liaoning Province was brought under control, eliminating the possibility of secondary explosions, Xinhua news agency reported.

An explosion ignited the blaze at the refinery in Fushun City, said a spokesman for the Publicity Department of the Fushun Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China.

A subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation, Fushun Petrochemical Company owns the refinery.

No casualties have been reported so far. Thick smoke hovers over the refinery, blotting out most of the sky, witnesses said.

The local government initiated an emergency response to the incident.
