London: Britain's Ministry of Defence says a soldier has been killed by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan.

The Ministry said that a soldier from 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) was working alongside an Afghan security forces' patrol in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand province when he was struck by an explosion from an improvised explosive device.

The soldier's name was not released, but the ministry said his family has been notified.

The death brings to 405 the total number of British forces who have died while serving in Afghanistan since the start of the war in October 2001.
