New Delhi: Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh’s latest comment over Army Chief VK Singh’s date of birth controversy has created a fresh stir.

In a letter addressed to the Defence Minister AK Antony in mid-December, Captain Singh had recommended considering General Singh’s DOB as May 10, 1951.

Citing the letter as his personal opinion, the former Punjab CM has tried to quell the crisis. But the problem remains as the letter has been written on party's letter head.

Earlier a delegation of MPs met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and urged him to solve the issue. Even Samajwadi Party general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Mohan Singh sought clarification on the issue in the Upper House.

Reacting to that, the PM not only declined to make any interference on the issue but also advised the MPs to keep themselves away from the functioning of armed forces.

Terming the political interference as a healthy move, Major General (Retired) RK Arora said, “It is natural for political leaders to comment on the controversial issue as the country has second largest army in the world after China.”

Commenting on the issue, Mahabali Singh, a member of the Standing Committee on Defence said, “The Parliamentarians have the right and duty to express their views over issues related to the country’s strategic importance.”
