Kanpur: The Uttar Pradesh Labour Department has decided to provide Rs 10,000 as financial assistance to factory workers employed in the state government's industrial units for their daughters' marriage.

According to a statement released by the Labour Commissioner's office on Tuesday, the Labour Welfare fund will be used to provide financial assistance to factory workers during their daughter's marriage.

The scheme, which has been launched first time in the state, will be applicable only to those workers who are working in a public industrial unit registered under the Factories Act 1948, and whose salaries are less than Rs 10,000 per month, it said.

The beneficiaries can avail this scheme for the marriage of two daughters only and the workers will be required to file an application one month before their daughter's wedding, and the bride should be at least 18 years of age.

With this move, it is hoped that factory workers, who are often poor and from backward areas, no longer consider their daughters as a burden, and will lessen the discrimination based on gender.

For the verification of daughter's name and marriage - ration card, ESI card, educational qualification certificate and the original wedding card should be attached with the application.

Regarding girl's age- school certificate or birth registration certificate or the certificate issued by village head or Sarpanch would be applicable, the release added.
