Earlier, England striker Wayne Rooney had been on the firing line for any of national team’s poor performance but Gerrard’s terrible campaign in the World Cup so far has taken attention away from the talismanic Manchester United striker.

The England fans held Gerrard responsible for both the goals England conceded during their 2-1 defeat against Uruguay.
Gerrard’s Liverpool teammate Luis Suarez, who had returned from an injury, scored two goals to almost eliminate England out of the World Cup.

Firstly, Gerrard gave away the ball in the lead-up to Suarez’s first goal, who opened up the scoring for Uruguay with a neat header past goalkeeper Joe Hart in the 39th minute.

Manchester United talisman and England’s best player Wayne Rooney then equalized in the second half but Suarez struck with six minutes to go when he went clear of England’s defence and scored a rocket of a goal.

England fans blamed Gerrard for the second goal as in the buildup of Suarez’s second goal, the England captain had lost an aerial dual to Edinson Cavani, which led to the decisive goal.

Several football pundits after the game advised Gerrard to retire from international football but fans did not made any efforts to hide their displeasure over their captain’s terrible performance.

“On a big plus Gerrard will be remembered as Captain failure for club and country this season, that alone should bring a smile to your face,” wrote a football fan with Twitter handle Zar ‏@unknownsock_zar.

“Gerrard is England's biggest disappointment so far. After years of playing in a duo with Lampard that didn't work, he had a chance to shine,” added another England fan with the Twitter handle Nooruddean ‏@BeardedGenius.

Another England fan Gene Oliver wrote on Twitter, “Not attacking Gerrard, but the mistake for Suarez' second? V. amateur. Didn't look 100% fit (or committed?)
