Lucknow: Demanding ban on the operations of American agriculture firm 'Monsanto' in the country, All India Kisan Sabha on Wednesday said the firm with its Indian partner 'Mahyco' used nine verities of Brinjal to develop genetically modified vegetable without the National Bio-diversity Authority's permission.

"The multinational company is challenging Indian law and the government policies to carry forward their economic interest and to capture Indian market," AIKS General Secretary Atul Anjan said in a statement.

In 2010, an intense debate on developing BT-brinjal was held in the Parliament and in public, and the then Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh declared a moratorium on the issue on health and safety grounds, he said.

Recently, US agri-business giant Monsanto has developed BT-brinjal and it is a challenge not only to National Bio-diversity Authority, but also to the law of the land, Anjan alleged.

He said the AIKS demands ban all activities and operations of Monsanto in India because BT-brinjal cultivation with bring hazards and consumers' health will be affected.
