New Delhi: The Central government is likely to consider a further increase in the Fair and Remunerative Prices (FRP) of sugarcane.
Union Food Minister KV Thomas, on Thursday assured a delegation of farmers in this regard. The government is likely to announce its decision before the arrival of crushing season.

Upset with government’s recent decision on sugar exports, the delegation of farmers urged Thomas to grant permission for additional10 lakh tonne sugar exports. According to farmers, the present stock of sugar is enough to meet the domestic demand and if the sugar prices are not increased it can create a problem for sugarcane farmers.

The sugar mills were operating in heavy financial loss as sugar was sold in lower prices because of which compensation of farmers in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh is still pending.

Giving the account of meeting with Thomas, Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Farmers Association president Avdhesh Mishra said the price of sugarcanes should be Rs 350 per quintal as the expenditure in sugarcane farming has increased.
