Patiala: Farmers from 72 villages of Haryana and Punjab held a Mahapanchayat to stage protests against the construction of a 4-km long concrete wall beside the Hansi-Butana canal.

The villagers stood against the construction of the Hansi-Butana canal raising the fear of severe damage to the nearby villages if the Ghaggar River is in spate. According to them, the water of the river cannot be released which will wreak havoc to dozens of villages.

The Mahapanchayat was held on Sunday under the leadership of Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta-Dakonda.

Hundreds of people under the leadership of Punjab Yuva Akali Dal State president Harinder Pal Singh blocked the Kethal-Patiala road. After the intervention of senior officials, they lifted the blockade.

The farmer leader warned to block the Patiala–Chika road on August 8 with a huge mass gathering of farmers from Punjab and Haryana villages at the Ramnagar Grain market.

Darshan Pal, leader of farmers, said, “The construction of the wall will lead to severe damage in case of floods as the water from adjoining streams will also collect at the canal leading to a devastating effect.”
