Turf is ready in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib Constituency for a triangular contest among sitting MLA Didar Singh Bhatti of People’s Party of Punjab (PPP), SAD General Secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra and Congress candidate Kuljit Singh Nagra, the in-charge of ‘Kisan Khet Congress Majdoor Association.

Instead of fielding a local candidate, Congress has fielded its veteran state unit leader Nagra and trying to woo voters on development plank.

Didar Singh Bhatti of PPP won the last assembly election with a convincing margin of 23,000 votes against his nearest Congress rival. Bhatti is also pinning his hope for the support of the local electorates on work done for the development of the area like- construction of railway over bridge and roads. Bhatti appears very hopeful of registering victory again this time from here.

Denying ticket to former local MLA, Dr Harbans Lal, from this constituency, Congress has risked its poll-prospects. Dr. Lal is contesting as an independent candidate from here. Dr Harbans Lal won the 1992 assembly election as BJP candidate. Later, he joined the Congress camp and defeated the SAD candidate in 2002. In last assembly elections (2007) he lost to Didar Singh Bhatti of PPP.  Lal throwing his cap in the ring this time as an independent candidate is definitely going to be painful for Congress candidate Nagra. Another prominent local figure Simranjeet Singh Mann is also trying his luck once again from here.
