Chandigarh: Accusing the main Opposition Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) of politicising the FDI issue unnecessarily, Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said opening up retail sector will not only result in reducing the prices of food items but will also help in checking the inflation.

Addressing an election rally here at Sector 40, the Minister made an attempt to clarify the government stand behind rising petroleum prices.

He said, “Since petrol prices depend on the international market rates, the country has to make a balance with the existing global prices.”

He asserted that FDI in retail would help in controlling inflation therefore we need to woo foreign investment in our country.

He also opined that the BJP during its regime had proposed 100 percent FDI in retail sector, adding “FDI in retail will solve many problems like inflation, price rise and unemployment.”

Bansal also took the opportunity to remind the opponents that US President Barack Obama praised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the steps taken by his government.

The rally was organised in support of the party candidate Gurbaksh Rawat.

Besides Congress candidate Gurbaksh Rawat, Pawan Sharma, Ravindra Pal Singh, Bijendra Thakur, Rita Choudhary, Akshit, Hani Ravi, Kuldeep and Omkar were among other leaders who addressed the rally.

On this occasion, Harpreet Singh along with his 200 supporters joined the Youth Congress.
