New Delhi: Sticking to their guns, Team Anna on Sunday said that their fight over the formation of Lokayukta has not ended yet as their first priority is to bring an effective and strong Lokpal Bill to combat corruption.

Team Anna member Kiran Bedi said that the Central government is knee-deep in corruption and there is a dire need to clean the system.

According to Kiran Bedi, “It would be better to keep the states out of the ambit of Lokayukta if a Lokpal Bill is formed on the lines of the provisions tabled in the Parliament. This bill will also affect the strong agencies formed in Uttarakhand.”

Bedi added, “Anna Hazare has always demanded a powerful Lokpal in states as well. This doesn’t mean that you (government) impose a Central bill with weak provisions on the states giving the excuse of Anna’s demand.”

“If the root is weak, the whole structure will fall automatically, and that is why Anna has always demanded for an effective Lokpal,” she added.

Expressing dissatisfaction with states Lokayukta law Bedi opined, “At present, nine states have no Lokayukta law. In states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, the law cannot look into the corruption charges against Chief Ministers. In West Bengal, the Chief Minister herself appoints the Lokayukta. In Delhi, the government servants have been kept out of the ambit of this law. In Uttarakhand, there is also a provision to provide security to whistleblowers. These are the reasons why Anna is demanding an ideal law at the Centre to appoint Lokayukta in each state.”
