Kanpur: Atleast 200 tonnes of jute and 100 machines were damaged in a fire that broke out at JK Jute Mill in Kanpur causing damages worth crores of rupees.

The fire broke out on Saturday night in the weaving section of the mill and was finally controlled by atleast two dozen fire engines at 5 AM on Sunday morning, JK Jute Mill Director D P Bhattar told reporters.

No one was injured since the mill was closed down for Bakrid, he added.

According to prima facie evidence, the cause of fire seems to be a short circuit, however, a thorough investigation will be carried out, fire department officials said.

The mill will resume operation but the weaving section will remain closed for a while since it was completely gutted in the fire, Bhattar said.
