Begusarai/Samastipur: Over 137 houses were gutted, property worth several lakh rupees damaged and more than 24 cattle charred to death in separate incidents of fire in Bihar's Begusarai and Samastipur districts on Monday, official sources said.

A major fire broke out in a dalit locality at Malipur Taratol village in Begusarai district gutting about 70 houses and charring to death the cattle.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of a house and soon spread gutting in all about 70 houses and damaging property worth several lakh rupees, the sources said.

Local people and fire tenders extinguished the blaze, the sources said adding there was no report of casualty or injury to any person.

In Samastipur district, about 60 houses were gutted in a fire that broke out at Anjarhat village under Ujiarpur block after an overhead electric wire snapped and fell on one of them.

Seven houses were gutted in another incident at Bathnaha village under Khanpur block, the sources said.

The local people extinguished the blaze by sprinkling water from pumping sets, they said.
