Jaipur: Introducing tablet PCs for recording the data of the survey, the Rajasthan Government is going to commence the first-ever Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) in the state from November 1.

The Central Government has asked the state government to conclude the caste census by December 2011.

The caste census will be used for classification of people in Below Poverty Line (BPL) category.

A unique feature of this census is that the enumerators would be using specially designed hand held devices and the data collected would be fed directly into the computers.

This census is entirely paper-free as a low-cost tablet PC will be used for the collection of data.  The details of the census data will be put in the public domain.

Making the whole process tech-savvy, the collected information about the natives of Rajasthan will be sent to the state and Central governments online.

The information will be further available on the websites of state government, National Informatics Centre (NIC), Ministry of Rural Development and Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation.

According to the sources, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is especially manufacturing the tablet PCs for this census and they would cost Rs 3, 500.

The families having vehicles, tractors, boats, threshers, refrigerators, landline phones, possessing Kishan Credit Card with Rs 50, 000 or more limit, monthly income of Rs 10, 000 or more etc will not be grouped under the BPL category.
